Buddy and Scout
by Sharon Panning

I bought my place two years ago with the intent of having horses.  Soon I purchased a yearling colt and started looking for pasture pals.  I had thought that it would be nice to try to adopt a rescue animal and started my investigation. Researching all the equines I came upon donkeys, then Longhopes, and the rest is history!

I adopted a little guy named Buddy, a rescue from slaughter, who had been around horses before.  I fell in love the first time I saw him.  Those long ears and bright eyes.  My colt took to him and him to the colt. They became fast friends and playmates.

This past Spring I sent the colt for training and Buddy became so lonely.  I called Longhopes again and they said that a lady in the Springs was giving up her little BLM donkey, who was currently the pasture pal for her horse.  They were scheduled to pick him up and could bring him here and we could give it a try to see how they did. That's how I got Scout.

The colt has since come home and what a trio.  I think he thinks he's a donkey! They run and play tag and tug of war with their pasture balls. They are just the cutest little herd.

I work the colt, I work the donkeys.  Once to twice a week they all get groomed and worked with, treats help a lot with the donkeys.  They get carrots and apples at night and what a sight and sound as they beg while I get the horse settled first.

The farrier is amazed at how good these little guys are.  I really think it's the routine and the reward for their great behavior.  What personalities, Scout for example, just loves his rear scratched.  He'll maneuver anything for a chance, and it scares a lot of people because they think he's going to kick, nope never has, just wants a good scratching.  Buddy is like the main watch dog, the first one to let everyone know if something is going on.  They both love their brushings and ears scratched anytime.  I just love these little guys and they love me back. I'm so grateful to Longhopes and the wonderful work they are doing!  My little guys have taught and are teaching me so much. They are happy and healthy and I'm blessed to be their care keeper. I had no idea what donkeys were about, what a wonderful reward!
